Coles CMO Simon McDowell named marketer of the year

Coles CMO Simon McDowell as been named marketer of the year by the Australian Marketing Institute. Hungry Jack's Shake and Win app also took the gong for the best marketing programme at the annual awards.

McDowell overseas all the supermarket's marketing activity as well as its store development, as part of its ongoing turnaround strategy under CEO Ian McLeod.

He oversaw the multiyear deal the supermarket signed earlier this month with celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal.

Simon McDowell told AdNews the accolade was a recognition for the whole Coles marketing team.

Mark Crowe, AMI CEO said: "The Institute is thrilled to recognise Simon’s dedication and contribution to the marketing profession."

Hungry Jack's Shake and Win app achieved RIO of 1186%, and helped the fast food chain take on its rival McDonald’s by boosting revenue and customer numbers. The app, created by Clemenger BBDO Sydney, also directly contributed to 25% of profit growth at Hungry Jack's.

The AMI introduced a new logo yesterday as part of a modernisation effort to better serve its members and reflect the growing importance of marketing's role as a business driver.
