Coca-Cola has topped Interbrand's annual ranking of the best 100 global brands for the twelfth consecutive year, although technology brands continue their inexorable march up the ladder.

IBM, Microsoft and Google came in second, third and fourth place respectively, with GE, McDonald's and Intel just behind.

Apple jumped from 17th to 8th place this year, with a 58% growth in brand value. Search giant Google, which retained its spot in 4th place, saw the second-highest growth in brand value at 27%.

A similar study by research agency Millward Brown released in May named Apple the most valuable brand, displacing Google.

Interbrand Australia and New Zealand chief executive Damian Borchok said: "Technology brands are a good example of a market which is leading the way in terms of responding to consumer demand and listening for insights to guide product development."

Technology brands accounted for seven of the top ten brands (IBM, Microsoft, Google, GE, Intel, Apple and Hewlett-Packard) and four of the five "biggest risers" (Apple, Amazon, Google and Samsung).

Interbrand's Best Global Brands Report asseses brands' value based on the financial performance of the branded products or services, the role of brand in the purchase decision process, and the strength of the brand to continue to secure earnings for a company.
