The Australian Women’s Weekly has been crowned Magazine of the Year at the second annual Australian Magazine Awards (AMA).

The ACP Magazines’ title beat out last year’s winner, Better Homes and Gardens, owned by Pacific Magazines and News Magazines’ Vogue, to take the top award.

The judges applauded ACP’s reinvestment in The Australian Women’s Weekly which has resulted in editorial innovation and helped the 77-year-old title remain contemporary.

Better Homes and Gardens triumphed in the Home & Garden category for the second year in a row, while Vogue won the Women’s Fashion category.

This year saw two new categories join the awards, with ACP winning the Custom Magazine award for its Myer client publication Emporium, while the Niche Magazine category was won by ACP Magazines’ motorsport title Australian Auto Action.

Other winners included News Magazines’ Delicious in the Food & Entertainment category; Pacific Magazines Famous in the Women’s Lifestyle category, and ACP’s Australian House & Garden, which won U Turn of the Year.

News Magazines' MasterChef Magazine was crowned Launch of the Year while Pacific Magazines’ Women’s Health and Men’s Health won the Health & Family and Men’s category, respectively.

Bernard Leser, the founder of Australian Vogue, was inducted into the Magazines Hall of Fame. Leser has launched magazines on four continents, and still remains active in the publishing community.

The awards were presented at an exclusive breakfast this morning (5 November 2010) at Sydney’s Doltone House, where more than 250 guests celebrated winners across 18 categories.

The guest speaker was Jeff Burnes, head of marketing & communications for Danish jewellery house Pandora, who spoke of the importance of magazines in Pandora’s marketing strategy.
