Former News Limited boss John Hartigan has slammed the Australian inquiry into the media, calling it a “jihad” against the media company.
Hartigan told the Australian Financial Review he believed the federal government has used the independent inquiry as “a sort of jihad against News”.
“And they've got an outcome that will give people outside the industry a level of comfort,” he said. “But I think it is a total outrage.”
The inquiry has recommended that a News Media Council be set up to replace industry self-regulation and the Australian Press Council.
Hartigan said the Australian Press Council chairman Julian Disney had not been a “patsy” or a “friend” to major publishers such as News Limited and Fairfax.
