Akcelo has picked up the social media agency of record account for Virgin Australia and Velocity Frequent Flyer after a competitive pitch.

The brand experience agency will handle social-first creative and content production across both brands, and will act as a strategic partner on how social is integrated across the wider Virgin Australia business, which includes the Velocity Frequent Flyer program.

"Social is a key channel for how we connect with our customers day to day, and we were looking for a partner who could help us evolve our approach across both Virgin Australia and Velocity Frequent Flyer,” Virgin Australia CMO, Libby Minogue, said.

“Akcelo stood out for their strategic thinking and creative ambition, and their ability to connect brand, content and community in a way that feels relevant and engaging."

Akcelo CEO Aden Hepburn said the company was looking forward to working with the airline.

"We're incredibly excited to partner with Virgin Australia and Velocity Frequent Flyer at a time when social plays such a critical role in how brands connect with their audiences and fans,” he said.

“This is about building a more connected, responsive and engaging social presence that reflects the energy of the brand and the expectations of today's traveller."

The win follows a run of new business for Akcelo's social practice over the past six months, including taking over McDonald's social AOR and a wider remit across PepsiCo, covering snack brands including Doritos.
