Yahoo!7 has hit out at Ninemsn for attempting to pass off its newly-launched 'Slider' ad unit as an Australian media first, claiming the Yahoo!7 'Sidekick' unit passed that milestone over a year ago.
An email from Yahoo!7's PR agency alerted journalists to a Ninemsn announcement from earlier in the day, which had unveiled its 'Slider' ad unit. The announcement claimed the rich media format 'Slider' was an Australian media first.
The statement from Ninemsn described the format as a homepage medium rectangle placement. "[T]he 'Slider' features a consumer call to action, which once clicked, 'slides' the browser to the right, revealing a full-page execution with rich media functionality."
Yahoo!7 pointed out its own 'Sidekick' unit has been in the market for over a year and works in a similar way.
A Ninemsn spokesperson told AdNews: "The Sidekick and the Slider are two independent ad formats and are showcased as such by IAB. The key differentiator between the two formats is the fact that the Slider has a high impact branding bar that remains on the bottom of the user's screen when they first land on the page, increasing brand impact dramatically over that of the Sidekick and encouraging users to interact with the advertiser's content.
“Given that the IAB recognises these as two independent ad formats, we’re comfortable offering the Slider as a market first in Australia.”
