Network Ten's next big ratings hope The Renovators started off slow last night with less than a million viewers, despite MasterChef's 1.7 million lead-in audience.

The Renovators attracted a launch audience of 933,000 metro viewers in its temporary 8:30pm timeslot, according to OzTam's preliminary figures. The show will move into MasterChef's 7:30pm timeslot once the cooking competition wraps up in a couple of weeks.

In contrast, Nine's The Block, also a renovating competition reality program, attracted 1.8 million viewers in its earlier 6:30pm timeslot.

Network Ten remained positive about the show's prospects. A spokesperson said: "This is a solid start for an exceptionally well-made show and we expect the audience will build throughout the season. Last night, The Renovators achieved clear wins in Ten's target demographics and once viewers get a taste for the show, we're confident they'll be back for more."

According to Ten, the show won in its timeslot for the 18-49 and 25-54 demographics and was strong in the 16-39 demographic.

This morning, The Renovators was trending fifth on Twitter, with comments a mix of positive and negative responses to the program.
