Telstra's group managing director of business services and improvement, Robert Nason, has joined Foxtel as chairman, with senior marketer Kate McKenzie also joining the board.

Nason will replace the retiring Bruce Akhurst.

Both Nason and McKenzie, who is group managing director for innovation, products and marketing, will join the board on 1 June.

Under Telstra's partnership agreement with Foxtel's other shareholders News Limited and Consolidated Media, Telstra has the right to appoint the chairman.

Nason has been on the Foxtel board since March 2012.

Telstra chief executive David Thodey said: ““Robert and Kate each will bring tremendous experience and leadership ability to the Foxtel board at what is an important time for Foxtel as it consolidates its acquisition of Austar and continues to compete in a challenging market.”

The news comes as speculation surrounds the future of Foxtel's ownership. It has been widely reported James Packer is looking to sell his controlling stake in Consolidated Media, which is 25% owner of Foxtel.

Industry pundits have speculated that Telstra will try to buy the stake in Consolidated Media in order to gain a larger share in Foxtel, however the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has raised concerns this might affect competition.

Other potential bidders for Packer's stake include News Limited and Seven Group Holdings.
