NBN boss to outline multicast TV at ASTRA

NBN Co chief executive Mike Quigley will keynote the annual ASTRA subscription TV conference in March on innovation, where he will outline the impact the national broadband network will have on content and broadcasting.

Foxtel is already preparing to launch its next generation “IP-centric” set top box in 2013 which will move from traditional broadcast technology to internet protocol.

NBN is currently in beta testing for its multicast internet protocol TV service, allowing broadcasters and aspiring video distributors to serve high definition video with new audience interactivity linked to an array of IP-capable devices. The NBN’s multicast service is scheduled for initial public release in the September quarter.

The NBN will pass 485,000 premises by the end of 2012 with about 30 retail telecommunications providers so far having signed up to offer services on the embryonic network, which is being rolled across the country.

“Mike Quigley brings a unique perspective to understanding how the NBN will impact future demands for content as driven by an increasing consumer appetite for video rich material and how this will create opportunities for the subscription TV industry,” ASTRA chief executive Petra Buchanan said.

NBC Universal international president Jeff Shell and Foxtel’s new CEO, Richard Freudenstein, are also keynotes for the March forum.
