Mobile banking. It's a must-have in the modern world. Banks are piling in and consumers are lapping apping it up. But CommBank has given new meaning to the term with two fully-functioning portable banks built in shipping containers.

The thinking is that the pop-up banks can be deployed to areas affected by natural disasters and provide cash and insurance advice to families to help them rebuild, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph. It stemmed from CommBank's experiences during the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009.

The bank has two portable branches built in shipping containers based in Brisbane and Perth that can be attached to the back of a truck and driven to various locations. It unveiled them yesterday at the Royal Melbourne Show.

CBA regional general manager Richard Porter, who oversaw its operations during the post-Black Saturday period, told The Daily Telegraph: "We learned it is vital for people to get access to cash and advice. Banks are an important part of the community.

"Business need to operate and homeowners need to be able to get both advice and money to start trying to rebuild their lives."
