SYDNEY: The Australian Football League (AFL) grand final has trumped the National Rugby League (NRL) grand final as the most watched TV program of the year, but viewing numbers for both matches were down from last year's games.
Network Ten’s coverage of the Saturday (29 September) AFL grand final recorded an average audience of 2.56 million, while the Nine Network’s Sunday (30 September) NRL grand final broadcast pulled in 2.48 million viewers.
Both games were down from last year’s audience, where the AFL received 3.15 million and the NRL 2.56 million viewers.
The AFL telecast suffered due to the absence of the Sydney Swans in the final, played between Geelong and Port Adelaide, with only 321,000 Sydney viewers tuning in compared to 2006’s Sydney figure of 759,000.
The AFL grand final has now claimed the mantle of most-watched program of the year, replacing Kath & Kim’s debut on Seven with 2.52 million viewers. The NRL grand final is the third most-watched show of the year.
