The barriers and opportunities to travelling internationally

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, Australia’s sense of wanderlust is currently exploding, which means we may be in for some good news in the near future.

Yes - it is likely that some international corridors will open in 2021, assuming things keep going the way they’re going.

From our recent poll, we found close to half of Australians intend to travel overseas in the future, and to further support the desire for international travel we found that our Escape.com.au readers are consuming content related to the USA (#1) and Japan (#2) the most – these countries have consistently sat in the top five international destinations for Australians for the past seven months.

Does this consumer interest to travel internationally come with emotional baggage? Absolutely. The anxiety Australians have about travelling within Australia is exacerbated for international travel, with the investment of time, money and emotion a step up. However, there is opportunity for travel businesses to provide customers with some level of comfort.

Making the decision to book comes with far more nervousness than in pre-pandemic days. The level of concern when travelling internationally is, of course, considerably higher than when travelling domestic, with 42% of those polled saying they are extremely concerned. This concern is primarily fuelled by borders closing at short notice and consumers becoming stranded away from home.

Travel businesses need to provide clarity and transparency with their policies and take their customer care features to the next level. It’s a perfect opportunity to show up. They need to listen to their customers and make sure they provide easy-to-understand, safe offers. While the world remains uncertain, now is the time to remind consumers about the excitement and joy that comes with a foreign land.
