SCA shows off voice creativity in visual art campaign

Southern Cross Austereo has used voice to bring paintings to life in a campaign for the Queensland Eye Institute Foundation (QEIF).

The campaign Last Seen, developed by Publicis, paired nine visually impaired Australians with artist to create a painting of their last significant memory before they experienced vision loss.

The Studio then took the campaign further by creating soundscapes of the last thing subjects heard before losing their vision for the paintings.

“As humankind’s oldest form of communication, voice is such an intuitive and immersive way to tell stories,” says The Studio’s national head of creativity Matt Dickson.

“It’s been great to pair this with new tech in the form of a smart speaker skill. For brands, voice is the next frontier and it’s been fantastic to work with QEIF and Alkira to create a groundbreaking, audio experience.”

The artworks were auctioned off earlier this month, raising funds for the QEIF, and are displayed at Queensland Performing Arts Centre for the public.

The Studio also teamed up with voice software company Alkira to create a smart speaker skill which allows people to listen to the soundscapes by saying “Ok Google, talk to Last Seen exhibition”.

“The creative concept developed by Publicis immediately brought to mind audio’s ability to create an intimate and immersive experience which could truly honour the stories behind each painting,” says Jeanna Manifold, head of The Studio.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with QEIF and the team at Publicis to create a unique campaign and a suite of assets which sits across all of SCA’s audio platforms.”
