Animal protection groups RSPCA and Animals Australia have launched a national TV and radio ad calling for a full ban on live animal exports to Southeast Asia and The Middle East.

The M-rated ad, which was created by Loud, runs on the back of a nation-wide petition organised with advocacy group, GetUp, to pressure the government to stop live exports.

The ad has aired since Saturday on metropolitan and regional television stations and all metropolitan radio stations, during slots including The French Open and programs such as Downton Abbey and Gray's Anatomy.

“We'll keep it running with increased frequency until the Prime Minister does something [about live animal exports]” RSPCA spokesperson Lisa Chalk told AdNews.

The ad campaign follows ABC Four Corners' footage of Australian cattle being severely mistreated in Indonesian abattoirs.

The commercial began as a YouTube collaboration between the three organisations. The RSPCA told AdNews that donations to launch the ad on television have reached more than $300 000.

“It's been a very low cost campaign thanks to significant pro-bono support and the help of Loud," Chalk said.
