Heston Blumenthal serves up MasterChef's biggest 2014 audience

The biggest audience so far for this season's MasterChef Australia saw Ten win a bigger audience share than Nine last night, taking 24% - above Nine's 23.6%.

It's Heston Week on MasterChef and last night's challenge from UK chef Heston Blumenthal for the contestants to cook to appeal to the senses won an audience of 1.215 million – the show's biggest overnight audience since July 2012.

It was the second most-watched free-to-air show and the only non-news program to achieve more than a million viewers, according to preliminary overnight ratings figures from OzTam.

Offspring also made the top 10 for Ten, in sixth spot with an audience of 981,000. And the third outing of Ten's game show Family Feud just scraped into the top 20, with 657,000 viewers - its lowest audience so far.

Seven took the biggest overall audience share, at 30.1%. The return of its cop doco The Force: Behind the Line made a top 10 debut last night, pulling in 919,000 viewers across Australia's five metro areas, making it the eighth most-watched program.

Highway Patrol, also on Seven, finished in 10th spot with 903,000 viewers.

The top program of the night was Nine News, which won 1.250 million viewers, while Nine News at 6.30 was third with an audience of 1.139 million.

Completing the top 10 was Seven News, fourth with 1.135 million, Seven's Today Tonight, fifth with 1.124 million, and Nine's A Current Affair, seventh with 970,000.
