Make an ad but don’t make it too good.
It must be what’s going through the Victorian gaming Minister Tony Robinson’s head.
The “Know the odds” TVC, which is occasionally running on TV, is quite good. But not that good.
A person digs holes while the voice over says:
“You’re more likely to find buried treasure than win the top prize at the pokies. Know the odds and gamble responsibly.”
The message is okay. It’s not bad. It’s not that good. It’s a bit bland really as you can see here.
In fact, I'd say the message is completely lost on the problem gambler sweating over their last few dollars - probably their child's lunch money - on the pokies.
I reckon the bland message is just what the politicians needed. It shows that they are doing something but it’s not such a good ad that it will dent the billions of income from gambling each year.
It’s a crazy world but nice work for ad agencies prepared to make mediocre ads.
