Ed Kicker: Build it and they will come (without government advertising)

16 June 2010
Let’s face it the internet is going nuts. Nobody can ignore it and pretty much everybody is on it not just at home but now through their mobiles too.
The only thing that would be nice is for something faster, although I must admit the Telstra 3G network is pretty good, like the National Broadband Network.
It’s going to be brilliant and the government is spending $16 million over the next two years to tell us.
$16 million to tell us that something brilliant is coming? I wonder how much it will spend to get people to use it when it finally arrives, probably several years late.
I mean, what is the point. We all use the internet. Our big frustration is download speeds. And we all want better speeds and access across the nation.
It’s a no brainer. So why the $16 million campaign?
Well, it’s to make Prime Minister Kevin Rudd feel good and get elected again.
It’s the most profligate waste of public money ever seen. It’s not like anything has changed. It’s not like anybody needs encouraging to use the internet – or not.
It’s a massive waste of public money. And the ad industry is complicit in milking the government of this money by standing by and creating these nonsense campaigns, part of a total $84 million spend designed to keep [insert name of party leader here] in power.
You should be ashamed of yourselves.
