Woolworths and Coles burned in Get Up campaign

Activist group Get Up has launched a campaign targeting Coles and Woolworths for their ownership of poker machines, asking people to “chip in” to get the ad aired on television.

The organisation has said it aims to place the ad alongside Coles and Woolworths commercials.

A statement on the Get Up website said: “Most supermarket customers have no idea that Coles and Woolworths together own more than 15,000 high loss poker machines -- more than the top five Las Vegas casinos combined.

“These corporate giants are extremely sensitive to their brand and spend millions promoting a positive, family-friendly public image. That’s why we're taking this campaign to their own turf and into living rooms all around Australia.

“We’ve put together this spoof TV ad to grab their attention. Our expert media buyers have analysed Coles and Woolies’ advertising patterns with a plan to put our ad alongside theirs. Together, we'll use the battle of the supermarkets - including their huge ad budgets and brand sensitivity - to create customer pressure and positive change.”

The group has asked people to contribute money to pay for the ad's placement on television.
