Commercial news bulletins failed to get any significant bumps last night in the ratings despite the very public political battle played out between Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd.

Seven News was the second most watched show last night with 1.20 million metropolitan viewers, according to preliminary overnight ratings from OzTam, while Nine News was third with 1.11 million viewers.

The ratings and positions of the two main commercial bulletins are on par with last Wednesday 15 February, which saw Seven News with 1.18 million and Nine News with 1.12 million.

ABC News, which is broadcast at 7pm, got a slight bump with 1.00 million viewers, up from last Wednesday's figure of 854,000 viewers. 7:30 saw 744,000 viewers tune in, up from 605,000.

Ten's 5pm news bulletin garnered 636,000 viewers, compared to last week's 616,000.

Kevin Rudd's resignation of his Foreign Ministry position occurred just after 5pm (AEDT), well-timed to dominate the night's news bulletins. His announcement was the culmination of months of leadership speculation.

The most watched program last night remained My Kitchen Rules, which saw 1.63 million viewers tune in to amateur cooks compete.

Across the main channels, Seven won the night with 25.9% of audience share, followed by Nine with 18.7%, Ten on 13%, the ABC with 11.1% and SBS had 4.5%.
