Network Ten has denied hitting the pause button on controversial new reality TV program The Shire.

According to weekend reports, Ten had moved the yet-to-be launched show from its upcoming schedule and had not committed to giving it a broadcast date.

However, Ten told AdNews today: "The Shire is still part of our schedule. We are not in the habit of announcing start dates for new programs until closer to their commencement. Filming for The Shire is going well, we have discovered some really interesting characters and  we’re looking forward to introducing them to the Australian public when the time is right. Stay tuned.”

Production company Shine, which is behind The Shire, had not responded for comment at the time of writing.

The Shire, billed as Australian version of MTV hit Jersey Shore, and filmed in Sydney's Sutherland Shire area, has created headlines and provoked a strong response from the Sutherland council.

The council's mayor, Carol Provan, initially threatened to erect a boom gate across Tom Ugly's Bridge to block the production crew.
