Optus' managing director of marketing Michael Smith will step down from the top job in the new year, to take on a global role with the telco's parent company SingTel Group.

Smith has been appointed as chief commercial officer for SingTel's innovation business Group Digital Life.

A replacement for Smith in the top marketing position has not yet been revealed.

Smith has been charged with driving the growth agenda for this new business, with responsibility for driving digital innovation and sales and developing a strong digital brand.

Digital Life SingTel chief executive Allen Lew said: “Michael possesses deep expertise and insights into the Australian consumer. I am confident his appointment will bring to life many of the innovative ideas and distinct services that SingTel is introducing into the global market.”

Meanwhile, Austin Bryan, vice president of Lifestream in Singtel's Group Digital Life will move from his regional role to Optus, reporting to chief executive of consumer Australia, Kevin Russell.

His role will be to help Optus gear up for the next five years.
