But there was some positive news in the results. In the national category, News Limited’s Monday to Friday edition of The Australian recorded an increase of 3.5% to 133,701 copies.

The Weekend Australian also enjoyed a circulation rise.

Fairfax did not fare so well, with The Australian Financial Review falling 3.3%. However, the weekend edition was up 3.7%.

In New South Wales, Fairfax was again hit the hardest, with The Sydney Morning Herald weekday edition plummeting 11.9% to 184,613. The Saturday edition slipped 7.7%, while The Sun-Herald fell 8.1%.

News Limited fared much better in NSW. The Daily Telegraph weekday edition was down just 1.8% to 347,722. The Saturday edition posted a slight 0.01% increase, while the Sunday Telegraph was up 0.18%.

Victoria was hit with declines across the board. The weekday edition of Fairfax’s The Age declined 6%, while the Monday to Friday edition of News Limited’s Herald Sun fell 4.6%.

All other states posted a decline in circulation, with two exceptions. West Australian Newspapers’ The West Australian grew by 0.5%, while News Limited’s Sunday Territorian climbed 1.7%.

Meanwhile, newspaper inserted magazines dropped 3.6% overall. Fairfax’s Good Weekend experienced the steepest decline at 11.3%, but its Television title did manage a 7.3% increase.
