SYDNEY: Members of the Australasian Writers and Art Directors Association (AWARD)  and the Advertising Federation of Australia (AFA) both today unanimously voted in favour of creating a new combined industry body, The Communications Council.

As a result of the votes, The Communications Council, with the tagline of ‘Commercial creativity and connection’, will begin operations on 1 January, 2010.

Founding members of the Council will be the AFA, AWARD and the Account Planning Group (APG). The APG did not require an EGM to vote for the Council but its membership also supported the move, according to a release from the AFA.

“The combined strength of AWARD, AFA and the APG makes this an exciting time for us going forward,” said Richard Maddocks, AWARD chairman.

Belinda Rowe, chairman of the AFA, said: “The Communications Council will offer a more influential, unified and stronger voice on issues affecting our industry and our members’ interests.”

The first meeting of a transitional Board of The Communications Council will take place tomorrow (Wednesday 18 November), with agenda items including the selection of a chair,  the process of integration of the founding member organisations, budget planning and strategic priorities.
