One of the best ways to stay relevant, supercharge your advertising career and to better understand the big issues facing the marketing industry is to speak with leaders in the field and get their perspective on things.

But it’s not easy to just sit down and have a chat with some of the best thinkers in advertising from across the globe. Don’t worry though, listening to these podcasts will have the same effect.

Here’s a selection of the best:

UK

The Campaign Podcast

This one’s a bit intermittent, but the most recent episode posted last month is a cracker and the talent featured are undoubtedly super smart.

Nils Leonard from start-up creative studio Uncommon has some strong and carefully considered opinions about how advertising needs to evolve if it wants to survive. I’m looking forward to future episodes and you should be to.

IPA AdTalk

The IPA is probably the most highly regarded organisation in the world on the subject of advertising effectiveness. In recent years, they were the publishers of Peter Field and Les Binet’s seminal work, The Long & The Short Of it, on striking the right balance between short and long advertising tactics.

In this podcast, each episode is a dedicated to a one-on-one conversation with industry leaders like Rory Sutherland.

Borrow their knowledge in 20 minute increments and use it to super-charge your own career.

USA

Ad Age Ad Lib

This is a relatively new podcast from the bible of US advertising, Advertising Age.

The most recent episode features John Disend, founder and CEO, of RedScout as he gives his perspective on the merge between branding and product development and how pitching to be the agency of record for clients is a rather unsophisticated way to grow your business.

TBWA Disruptor Series

TBWA New York CEO, Rob Schwartz, spreads the gospel of disruption in this agency driven podcast.

The subject is not so much advertising, but how important it is to be disruptive to succeed in business today. Recent episodes have looked at subjects like disrupting fine dining and disrupting the news.

Disrupt your commute into work one day soon and tune in!

Australia

The AdNews Podcast

The AdNews podcast is a great way to stay in touch with what’s happening as interpreted by some of the Australian adland's most thought-provoking thinkers.

In recent times, this podcast has dug into subjects like how ad tech is affecting the advertising industry and discussions around transparency in agency and client relationships. If you’re new to the industry, this podcast is a great way to get an insight into what’s keeping senior management up at night.

Getting intimate with CX

This podcast is dedicated to exploring the gap between people’s rapidly growing expectations of brand experience and what business is delivering.

The podcast is hosted by CEO of Brandhook Australia, Pip Stocks, as she interviews marketing leaders from a broad spectrum of industries. I particularly enjoyed the episode with Stan Johnson, creative director at MYOB.

Paul Gardner’s Media, Marketing & Advertising Show

Paul Gardner is a statesman of the Melbourne advertising industry who is probably most well known in his capacity as chairman of Grey, a position he held for 13 years.

In this series, Paul interviews various advertising industry figures on issues of the time including The Royal’s Andy Siwka on their recent immersion into the small business market, Dentsu Mitchell’s John Thompson on the impact of programmatic media buying and yours truly on the five emotional stages of pitching for new business.

Happy listening!
