Yahoo's competitor to Outbrain, Yahoo Recommends, which also highlights suggested articles at the base of publisher pahes has been halted after only two years in operation.

Yahoo posted a brief statement on its site saying: “Yahoo Recommends signups are now closed”. A spokesperson told Digiday: “We have not made the decision to shut down Yahoo Recommends, however, we are not actively signing up new publishers at this time.”

Yahoo Recommends was launched into an already crowded market when it arrived in September 2014.

The move comes as Yahoo reveals that much of its core business is up for sale, while it is also being forced to cull 15% of its workforce.

Time Inc, publisher of Sports Illustrated, People and Time magazines, has apparently been exploring a bid to acquire the company's core internet business for several weeks, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters.
