Volvo or Holden? Ad for '99 Barina goes viral

By AdNews | 16 July 2014

Ironic second hand car ads are the new black. Hot on the heels of a home made ad for a '93 Volvo estate by Swedish art director Christoffer Castor, comes local homage in the form of a 1999 Holden Barina hatchback.

Creative agency Chimney Group, which also happens to have recently opened a Sydney office, made the ad for Apac digital director David Johns.

While the Swedish version was decidely low key, Chimney pulled out the stops and threw in just about all of the of the best car ad cliches: wheelspinning, fire, guy with sun glasses blasting through tunnels, go faster visual effects etc.

In the last 24 hours it has racked up 356,000 YouTube views. The question is can the '99 Holden Barina overtake the '93 Volvo, which, now sold, has been watched 1.67m times – with a sequel in the offing.
