The Victorian government has launched a confronting new COVID-19 campaign which focuses on real life stories from those who have experienced the virus first-hand.

The campaign features a series of stories from survivors including one man, Michael, who likened his experience with the virus after 72 days in hospital to drowning.

Michael survived but his mother-in-law ended up passing away from it.

The ads take a similar approach to road safety and anti-smoking campaigns with the aim to drive home the importance of following the lockdown restrictions, wearing a mask and practicing good hygience and social distancing in order to stop the spread of the deadly virus.

They will roll across television, radio and social media and appear in multiple languages following concerns about the lack of information made available to those in the community who's first language is not English.

The new campaign comes as Victoria continues to record large numbers of community transmission and an increasing number of deaths with the state's death toll sitting at more than 70 people now.
