The Australian box office is experiencing a golden age of cinema, according to a 2019 wrap-up by Val Morgan.

Avengers: Endgame broke a global record to become the highest grossing film in Australia of all time, claiming the ten-year reign over previous title holder Avatar.

Domestically it was the highest grossing film of 2019, with the highest opening day and weekend in box office history. Avengers: Endgame was seen by more than 4.3 million people across Australia.

Globally, 2019 has now seen seven films take more than $1 billion at the global box office so far: Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Spider-Man: Far from Home, Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4, Joker and Aladdin.

With record-breaking Frozen 2 currently on the big screen and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker about to release, 2019 is likely to see another two films joining the $1 billion club, continuing to drive social currency and conversations.

Frozen 2 opened in Australia generating $9.7 million in its four-day opening, making it the highest-grossing global debut of any animated film in history. The film has already delivered an audience of more than 1 million in only one and a half weeks of release.

Forecast to deliver an audience in excess of 4 million, Frozen 2 is on its way to become the highest-grossing animated film of 2019.

Hitting the big screen December 19, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker promises to deliver 2019’s next "Super Bowl" moment, ending an epic story told over 42 years and captivating passionate and highly attentive audiences.

In 2020 audience growth will be driven by blockbuster titles No Time to Die, Wonder Woman 1984, Birds of Prey, Black Widow, Mulan and Peter Rabbit 2.
