The Block tops Wednesday night TV

The Block has topped entertainment viewing on the first Wednesday since Gruen ended but news won the night over all.

Nine News and Seven News clocked 1.052 and 1.05 million viewers respectively, taking the top one and two spots.

Nine's The Block topped the entertainment shows on 922,000 viewers and was the fifth most watched show overall. It was down on last week's 1.037 million viewers which saw it top Gruen on its final show of the year.

The Block also led in the major demographics of 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54 age bracket.

Seven's Aussie Barbecue Heroes rounded out the top 10 on 682,000 viewers followed by Seven's new series Blindspot on 665,000 viewers.

Nine won the night on 31.6% audience share, followed by Seven on 27.8%. ABC picked up 18.3% audience share, Ten had 16.3% audience share and SBS followed on 6.0%.
