Telstra to take on Apple with tablet

Telstra is to enter the nascent tablet market with the launch of its own device that will compete with rival offerings such as Apple's iPad.

The T-Touch Tab will be available exclusively on Telstra's Next G network from November and will run on Google's Android operating system.

The device will be flash enabled, with two versions positioned at the premium end of the market, and the lower end to cater for families and young adults.

A preview of Telstra’s first mobile tablet appeared in the Telstra Store catalogue this week and the telco is already taking expressions of interest from customers.

Director of Telstra Mobility Products, Richard Fink said at a media briefing: "Telstra will have at least two Next G mobile tablets in market by Christmas: a mobile tablet for the premium market and a more affordable tablet for families and young adults. More details, including pricing, will be revealed in the coming weeks."

A Telstra spokeswoman said it was too early to comment on marketing plans to promote the launch of the T-Touch Tab.
