Henry Tajer will take the top job at Mediabrands and relocate full-time to New York after incumbent CEO Matt Seiler elected to step down from the role.

It's just over a year since Tajer was made the global chief operating officer of the operation, splitting his time between Sydney, as IPG's executive chairman in Australia, and New York.

IPG announced the move to shareholders overnight, with Seiler to stay on as global chairman until 1 May to ensure a smooth transition.

IPG chairman and CEO of the Interpublic group, Michael Roth, said Tajer's promotion was reward for making Australia one of the group's “growth engines”.

"It acknowledges Matt and Henry's contributions to the agency's achievements and positions them to focus on specific areas in which they can both continue to make key contributions to Mediabrands and IPG going forward," Roth said.

"Henry [Tajer] is a great media executive, who is valued by our people, clients and media partners. He's made Australia one of the growth engines for our network, with a vibrant and collaborative work environment in which new capabilities continue to come to the fore."

The identity of Tajer's replacement for his position in Australia is not yet known.
