Spotify has appointed former Slingshot Accelerator CEO Karen Lawson as its new managing director for Australia and New Zealand.

Lawson, who exited the start-up accelerator last year after more than two years, begins her role at the music streaming business on the 24 June, reporting directly to Spotify’s global head of markets, Cecilia Qvist.

She joins the company as it moves deeper into podcasting, having recently acquired podcast studio Gimlet and podcast creation app Anchor for US$340 million, and later purchasing the crime and mystery focused podcast network Parcast.

Lawson has also held executive positions within both global companies and joint ventures, working as CEO and founder of startup consultancy Xcite and sitting as an advisory board member for the Sydney Startup Hub.

Her appointment follows the departure of Jane Huxley earlier this year, who left for a global role within the music streaming business.
