It's the sixth radio ratings of the year and yet again Nova's Smooth FM has managed to not only retain the number one slot in drive in Sydney, but it has also increased its share by 1.2 percentage points. This makes it the city's most listened to drive time show – sitting pretty at an 11.3% audience share.

ABC 702 was again in second place, having edged up its 9.9% audience share to a 10.6% share. In third spot is 2GB with 9.6%. Nova's Kate, Tim & Marty show was the fourth most listened to show in drive time with a 9.3% share, having marginally increased its listeners by 0.2 percentage points.

Looking at who ruled the breakfast slot, after 2GB's Alan Jones with a 16.2% audience share and ABC 702's 11.9% audience share, the FM breakfast show to rule the roost is again Australian Radio Network's (ARN) Kyle and Jackie O.

Despite dropping from 9.8% to an 8.9% share, the duo held the spot. Next closest to the pair were Smooth FM and WSFM, which both sit at a 7% audience share.

Southern Cross Austereo's (SCA) 2DayFM, with Rove and Sam, again gained share, rising from a 4.1% audience share to a 4.3% stake. Back in the first radio ratings this March, the pair had a 3.0% audience share.

Melbourne: Drive time heats up; Triple M recovers on breakfast

Hamish & Andy continue to reign supreme in the FM drive slot with an 11% audience share, but the battle for second place has heated up.

Nova's Kate, Tim and Mary clung onto second spot with an 8.1% audience share after shedding 0.7 points between 10 July and 17 September.

They lead by a whisker (0.1 percentage points in radio talk) from Triple M's rush hour (JB and Billy gained 0.8 points), Smooth (down 0.4 points) and Gold (up 0.3 points) – each with an 8% share.

3AW's Tom Elliott still dominates the AM band, up 0.7 points to 11.9%, while the ABC's Rafael Epstein gained a respectable 0.7 points to win an audience share of 8.5%.

That's where the good news ends for the ABC in Melbourne. The station lost ground across all other timeslots, including a 2.1 point drop to 12.8% in the coveted breakfast slot. This helped 3AW's Ross and John secure top spot despite themselves shedding 1.1 points to a share of 18.7%.

SCA dominates the FM band with Triple M's Eddie, Mick and Luke up 0.8 points to a share of 9.2%. They increased their lead over stablemate Fox FM's Fifi, Dave and Fev, who gained 0.6 points to 8%. It's a good recovery for McGuire and crew after they dropped 1.1 points in the previous radio survey.
