R/GA is expanding its presence in Melbourne and AdNews understands it is plotting opening a shop there as it ramps up pitch activity around Melbourne-based clients.

It would also be able to service its client Toyota from Melbourne, which is in the midst of closing its Sydney base and consolidating staff into its Melbourne headquarters.

R/GA Sydney was named digital agency of record by Toyota Motor Corporation Australia and Toyota Finance Australia at the end of last year.

R/GA would not reveal who will be running the Melbourne operations, but according to LinkedIn there are several staff already located in the Melbourne office.

Saatchi & Saatchi, Toyota's lead creative shop for more than 20 years, is also in the process of transitioning the account to its growing Melbourne office.

There was a lot of hype around R/GA when it launched in Sydney four years ago. In August last year, former MD Jon Holloway made a surprise exit from the business as Rebecca Bezzina returned to lead the agency.

As more agencies eye Melbourne, the competition in the smaller market seems to be ramping up.

This year, both The Monkeys and With Collective announced they were looking to open Melbourne shops.

M&C Saatchi Sydney was named the brand and retail agency for Toyota sub-brand Lexus in 2014. AdNews can confirm it will continue to service Lexus from its Melbourne office.
