The family of renowned adman Neil Lawrence are questioning the emergency response of a diving company, after he passed away on one of its trips.

Lawrence's family told The Sydney Morning Herald that they have struggled to get an accurate picture of his cause of death, nine months after it took place.

Lawrence, a celebrated creative who was also responsible for Kevin Rudd's 'Kevin 07' campaign, had been on a diving holiday on a luxury charter in the Maldives with his son, Tom Lawrence.

According to the paper, questions have surfaced from his family regarding the response from the tour company, after Lawrence got into trouble during the dive.

His son alleges that the safety briefing for the dive was short and noted a lack of medical staff when the charter reached the shore.

The diving company has denied all allegations. A coroner's report is due on 18 March.

Lawrence's passing last year led to a flood of tributes including a tribute from Qantas group CEO Alan Joyce, who called him one of the best storytellers Australia has ever produced.
