Optus English Premier League coverage will cost Optus customers $15 extra per month, the telco revealed today.

In the wake of Leicester's remarkable Premier League victory, Optus also revealed that EPL access will be free for any customers with current plans valued at $85 per month.

While this may sound reasonable for Optus customers, those not already signed up to the telco can expect to pay a minimum of $65 per month on the cheapest 24 month Optus My Plan. This includes a small 500MB of monthly data. More workable data allocations can be found on plans worth $85 per month.

Optus has revealed that streaming will be data free, which had been a concern by fans given how data intensive live streams can be.

The next EPL season can be accessed via postpaid mobile, mobile broadband and home broadband bundles, confirming that Optus will use EPL content to attract new customers.

“From mobile plans with generous data and call inclusions, through to home broadband plans that come with unlimited data, Yes TV by Fetch, and the EPL included, Optus has a great range of EPL plans suited to all lifestyles and budgets," Optus managing director of marketing and product Ben White says.

"While you’ll need to be an Optus customer to get all the EPL action, Optus research shows that close to two in three (63%) football fans, who are not already Optus customers, are out of contract for at least one of their fixed broadband or mobile services."

"We’re confident that when these fans see our range of great value EPL-ready plans, they’ll be convinced that now’s the right time to switch. And for those not quite ready to make that extra commitment, we also have a great postpaid BYO mobile plan that will provide access to the EPL."

Optus' EPL offering includes:

  • Every match live: Australia’s first 24/7 EPL channel boasts up to nine sub-channels.
  • Dedicated EPL channel: Optus’ 24/7 EPL channel will carry all 380 live matches of the 2016/17 season, as well as EPL news and analysis with shows such as Match of the Week, News, Fanzone and Match Day Live.
  • Un-metered EPL: Streaming EPL over the Optus mobile and fixed network will be data free on eligible plans. This means customers accessing the content from an eligible plan will be able to stream as much EPL content as they want, without using their mobile, mobile broadband or home broadband data allowance. (Note: advertisements, analytics and authentication use data).
  • Device of your choice: Optus will launch new mobile and tablet apps and a dedicated website that will allow customers to synch up to four devices through their subscription.
  • Screen-in-screen viewing: Subscriptions come with access to a dedicated new website that supports up to four screens, for those times when games are on at the same time.

Fans can access the EPL coverage via the big screen through Optus' Yes TV on a Fetch set-top box. Fetch TV also offers subscriptions to other SVOD players including Netflix and Stan, and also offers BeIN Sports, which shows games from the major football leagues across South America and Europe.

In July, Optus will introduce a mini set-top box that extends Yes TV to Optus postpaid mobile customers who want to transmit content on TV screens for an extra $5 per month. This applies to customers who do not have Optus broadband, but data charges may apply.

Optus' dedicated EPL channel will be available via an app for compatible smartphones and tablets or through an Optus EPL website for desktops.

Optus urges new customers not to leave home broadband installations to the last minute, while existing customers can check online if their plans are EPL eligible.

In areas where Optus broadband is not available or doesn't support HD content, customers can gain access via satellite for an extra $20 per month and a dish installation fee.
