The return of the NRL season attracted 535,000 metro viewers on Nine.

The game, between Parramatta Eels and Brisbane Broncos, had been highly anticipated as it’s one of the first live sporting competitions in Australia, and the world, to resume after suspensions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Last night’s game which went ahead without a crowd to meet coronavirus restrictions, attracted 535,000 metro viewers, with another 303,000 regional viewers for a total of 838,000 viewers.

This is compared to NRL’s first match of the season on March 12 of 391,000 metro viewers.

FOX LEAGUE’s coverage reached 683,000 viewers with the 401,000 average audience including viewing on Foxtel NOW and Foxtel Go. The figures do not include viewing data from Kayo Sports.

The Parramatta Eel’s 34-6 victory over the Brisbane Broncos last night to re-start the 2020 Telstra NRL Premiership season scored record ratings for Foxtel, with an average 401,000 viewers watching across subscription television.

The match, broadcast LIVE and ad-break free on FOX LEAGUE on Foxtel and Foxtel NOW, was the most watched regular season simulcast game ever and the number one game of the 2020 season.

Head of FOX SPORTS Peter Campbell: “Footy is back on and it is a great result for sports fans and our customers who have been missing live sport and have re-connected and watched the NRL in record numbers.

“It augurs well for the weekend with FOX LEAGUE on Foxtel, Foxtel NOW, Foxtel GO and Kayo Sports, the only place to see every game of the NRL, LIVE and ad-break free.”

FOX LEAGUE will broadcast every game of every round of the 2020 Telstra NRL Premiership Season LIVE and in HD with no ad-breaks during play.

Last night, Nine and Foxtel confirmed a revised deal with the NRL.
