News Corp is going big on podcasts after true crime success

News Corp Australia, leveraging the runaway sucess of its true crime podcasts, has formed NewsCast to ride a surge in the popularity of podcasting. 

The Australian's The Teacher’s Pet podcast has had more than 45 million downloads, a most downloaded program across the US, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

Now News is accelerating its offering with a portfolio of podcasts to be produced, marketed and distributed by high profile talent drawn from News Corp Australia’s diverse businesses.

The iniative was annoucned at Come Together 2019, the media group's annual showcase. 

The podcast programs will be devoted to news, sport, travel, food, lifestyle, finance, and the popular true crime genre.

News Corp Australia executive chairman Michael Miller told Adnews there's a market for high quality, well researched podcasts.

"Australian consumers are great podcast users," he says. "And Australian advertisers get the clicks."

Julian Delany, News Digital Networks Australia managing director, says:  "Australians’ appetite for news delivered in new formats is insatiable. We've particularly seen this in podcasts,"

NewsCast podcasts will include Generation Dollar, a joint effort by Vogue Australia and The Australian to guide women through their financial journey.

The Australian will produce a series focusing on Australians’ obsession with propert, On The Fence.

True Crime Australia will feature a new true crime series, Police Tape.

In food, Taste.com.au’s Eat Real Unwrapped podcast launched in January this year. Series two and three are already in planning.

A six part series, Chef Confidential, is coming soon with the famously outspoken Colin Fassnidge and celebrity butcher Anthony Puharich.

And Deathrow Degustation will reveal favourite dishes of top chefs as they contemplate what would be their last meal.
