News Corp is closing its Victorian and NSW contact centres in July, which is being reported to impact up to 120 staff.

The operations will be moved to Adelaide to consolidate operations, "modernise" the publisher's structure and establish “Centres of Excellence”.

It is part of a broader plan announced last year by News Corp to save $40 million across its Australian operations.

News Corp will also consolidate its QLD and ARM direct sales contact centres into one hub in QLD.

The redundancies will impact call centre staff and advertising account managers across metropolitan, local and regional publications, including Melbourne’s Herald Sun, Leader Newspaper, Weekly Times and Geelong Advertiser.

AdNews understands several editorial numbers have taken voluntary redundancies at The Australian. While News Corp would not confirm how many, The Guardian is reporting six jobs have been cut.

“We are making these changes to serve our customers better. The needs of our customers have changed and we must too,” News Corp chief operating officer Damian Eales says.

News Corp is working will all impacted employees to identify potential redeployment opportunities.

“We have a number of programs available that will assist the impacted team members across NSW & VIC throughout the transition,” Eales says.

Earlier this year News Corp let go more than 70 staff photographers along with a slew of production staff.

Rival Fairfax Media also bid farewell to dozens of journalists last week, including several senior positions, this week from metro mastheads the Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review and the Age.
