The Monkeys hires Ben Sampson as creative director

The Monkeys has hired Ben Sampson as creative director. Sampson arrives home to Sydney after a year-and-a half in San Francisco, working as a creative director at Argonaut. Drawn to San Fran by the opportunity to work on tech giant Fitbit, his Effie award-winning work helped the company stay ahead of Apple in wearable tech. Prior to this, Sampson was a director at Idea Gallery – a creative collective working with innovative agencies and brands from Sydney to Dublin. As a creative director working on Coke Zero, Sampson’s ‘Just Add Zero’ campaign was the first Australian work to be adapted globally by Coke.

Twitter celebrates 10 years of the hashtag

On August 23, 2007, the #hashtag was born on Twitter. Now a normal part of everyday internet usage, Twitter has revealed one of the most widely used and recognised symbols in the world was invented almost by accident. 10 years ago, Chris Messina @chrismessina tweeted #barcamp, the first time a hashtag was used to bring a group together. Twitter says an average of 125 million hashtags are shared each day, despite Twitter’s management initially having reservations about the idea. Globally, the most tagged TV show is #TheWalkingDead and #StarWars is the most popular movie. In Australia, political junkies have used the #auspol tag 3.5 million times.
