Consumer watchdog launches comparator guidelines

The consumer watchdog will continue its crack down on websites that compare services such as energy and insurance with the release of tough industry guidelines.

The ACCC has previously collected $2 million in penalties for misleading advertising by Energy Watch and a 2014 review that found some comparator sites were misleading users by providing dodgy information.

The guidelines will protect consumers by ensuring industry is complying with the law by clearly disclosing what is being compared and transparency around commercial relationships.
ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said there would be “no excuse” for non-compliance.
