New industry betting app set to shakeup advertising award shows

The app allows audience to choose who they think will win in each category.

Award shows are filled with glitz, glamour and celebration, but we've all found ourselves looking at our watches or for the next glass of Champagne as the night drags on.

To stop people tuning out after the nominated categories have passed, Special Group and Nakatomi have launched a new betting app called Tipsy.

The free event-based tipping app lets audience pick winners in each award category for the chance to win cash prizes. Users enter their selections at the start of the night, then follow the results throughout via a live leaderboard.

The app debuted at last Friday’s B&T Awards where CHE Proximity CEO Chris Howatson correctly tipped 17 of the night’s 35 categories, winning the $1,000 cash prize sponsored by Uber Eats.

“Even when you don’t win an award, Tipsy means you can. It made the whole night a lot of fun,” says Howatson.

“We were really stoked that Tipsy was such a hit on debut at B&T. It’s a bit of fun and a great companion app, gamifying any live event – award shows, broadcasts and more,” says Special Group managing partner Cade Heyde.

AdNews recognised that the long award shows has become a tired format, which is why this year it revitalised its own award programme for 2019, boasting an entirely new format, revised entry and judging criteria and a renewed emphasis on celebrating the industry's work. Read more here.
