NBN to boost download speeds

SYDNEY: The National Broadband Network Company (NBN Co) is to boost the broadband network with speeds up to ten times faster than originally promised.

NBN Co chief executive Mike Quigley announced this morning the new network will enable a peak speed of one gigabit per second, which is significantly higher than the original promise of 100 megabits per second.

The new speed will not require an enlargement of the $43 billion price tag, and it will be possible to further upgrade the fibre optic system in the future.

The news of the upgrade follows the recent announcement by the Coalition that, if elected, it will ditch the NBN and instead spend $6.3 billion upgrading existing telecommunications infrastructure.

NBN Co has been tasked with delivering wholsale-only broadband coverage to every Australian home and business via retail service providers like Optus and Telstra.

The organisation signed an $11 billion agreement with Telstra in June, giving NBN Co access to Telstra infrastructure in preparation for the rollout of the network.
