Movers & Shakers: IPG, Nine, Trade Desk

It's hard to keep up with all the latest moves across media, marketing and advertising, so we've made a list. Check out the biggest moves in adland this week.

Danny Bass to exit IPG Mediabrands
IPG Mediabrands Australia CEO Danny Bass has resigned from the business after three years. Wins at the agencies Bass oversees were clocked up last year with UM scoops including the $150 million master media account for the Australian Government, as well as Nestlé ($50m), AGL ($23m) and American Express. Bass has previously worked at GroupM and News Corp and is also a board member at the Media Federation of Australia and UnLtd.

Nine nabs ex-Carat CEO Paul Brooks
Ex-Carat CEO Paul Brooks has joined Nine as director of sales in Sydney. Brooks headed up Dentsu Aegis Network-owned media agency Carat for two years and prior to that ran the network's media investment division, Amplifi. Brooks will report to Nine's director of sales for television Richard Hunwick and his start date will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Trade Desk's Mitch Waters moves to Singapore
The Trade Desk is restructuring its business, following the promotion and relocation of ANZ general manager Mitch Waters. Waters has been named senior vice president of South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand for The Trade Desk and will now be based out of Singapore. His replacement is former head of owned and earned at Mindshare Clay Gill, who will be supported by Waters locally until he relocates to the Singapore office in the second half of the year.

Ikon's programmatic director exits for independent Admatic
Ikon's programmatic director Sarah Melrose has exited the agency for a newly created role at Admatic Australia. Melrose, who had been at the WPP Australia-owned agency for more than three years, is now head of programmatic, data and technology at digital media agency Admatic. She has previously worked at Microsoft and Kingpin Communications.

Marcel founder leaves for start up
Founder of Publicis-owned creative agency Marcel Sydney, David Nobay, will leave the agency this month to focus on a new venture. Nobay, who was also creative chairman of the agency, led the inception of the business in November 2015. The move follows the departure of Marcel CEO Gavin Levinsohn and the loss of foundation client Tiger Beer. Nobay, also the former creative chairman at Droga5 Australia, is creating a new venture called “Imperfect Circle”, in partnership with boutique post production agency Fin Design & Effects.

PHD's new head of strategy
PHD Sydney has promoted strategy director Mitch Long to head of strategy. Long first joined the agency as an intern seven years ago and quickly climbed the ranks, working in investment planning before starting as strategy director in 2015. He's worked across accounts for Unilever, PepsiCo, VW and Google. Long reports to chief strategy officer Stewart Gurney.

Criteo hires Google's head of retail
Criteo has named Google's head of retail Colin Bernard as its commercial director for Australia and New Zealand. Colin spent 12 years at Google as head of retail and Google Shopping ANZ. Colin reports to Criteo managing director SEAPAC Alban Vilani.

Merkle's Columbus reveals new GM
Columbus, a Merkle Company, promoted Guy McGechan to general manager of Vic, WA and New Zealand, following an extensive global search. McGechan first joined Columbus at the start of 2018 as group client partner, where he led the Victorian team. He has previous experience with retail clients such as David Jones, Kathmandu and Officeworks. He has previously worked at Havas and MediaCom.

Performics reveals new roles
Publicis Media’s performance marketing agency Performics named two key appointments, with Aaron Vardon joining as national head of strategy and planning, and Simon Gellibrand promoted to the new role of national customer services director. Vardon was previously strategy director at Ikon Communications. Gellibrand has been with Performics for almost six years, most recently as head of performance media.
