MediaCom has promoted digital boss Willie Pang to chief operating officer of the agency and will become its Melbourne leader.

Pang will be tasked with growing the business through product and new business development as well as a continuing to lead on MediaCom solutions nationally, including the digital, data and innovation portfolio.

He will relocate to Melbourne to take up the role in July and will become the most senior leader of MediaCom's Victorian operation.

Growing its Melbourne business has become a priority for MediaCom. The agency has been restructuring how it operates and in the past year former managing director Anny Havercroft and general manager Brett Elliot have exited the business. Havercroft recently joined Yahoo7 as head of brand.

MediaCom CEO Sean Seamer said that Pang has been instrumental in repositioning MediaCom and how it serves its clients to adapt to the digitisation of media and marketing during his 18 months as chief digital officer.

“When we began our search for leadership in Melbourne, first and foremost we wanted someone that would be a strong cultural fit for our people and clients. Someone that can inspire, lead and bring a team together,” Seamer said.

“In the past 18 months, Willie has demonstrated that he's an electric and engaging personality that does just that.

“His background in digital, venture capital and start-ups, along with his time at MediaCom, have given him the exact qualities to do just that. He is, hands down, the best person for the role and he takes it up with unequivocal support from the MediaCom and GroupM leadership teams."

Pang, who described past year-and-a-half as the “best in my career”, described the move as a “dream come true”.

“I firmly believe that MediaCom is at the forefront of transforming what it means to be a media agency and our Melbourne business will play a critical role,” Pang said.

“I'm a Melbourne boy, born and bred, and after 11 years away, this is a dream come true.”

Pang begins his new role on 1 July.
