17 December 2019

Our Industry Profile takes a look at some of the professionals working across the advertising, ad tech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles and companies across the buzzing industry.

This week we speak to Southern Cross Austereo group sales manager Sandy Rogers.

Time in current role/time at the company:
Four years at SCA and new to the GSM role.

How would you describe what the company does?
SCA delivers a day in day out engaged audience with scale across Australia through entertaining audio content.

What do you do day-to-day?
Work collaboratively with the talented team at SCA to help our agency clients deliver campaign solutions that drive business outcomes.

Define your job in one word:
Communication.

I got into media because:
I love seeing people and businesses thrive.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role?
Maintaining the balance of working on bigger picture ideas, all the while keeping on top of the day-to-day workload.

What’s the biggest industry-wide challenge you’d like to see tackled?
I would love to see more collaboration between audio businesses like ours and creative agencies. I witness firsthand the incredible engagement a great audio commercial can deliver when done right!

Previous industry related companies you have worked at:
Nova - as a street teamer - haha, how good!

Notable campaigns you have worked on:
McDonald’s partnering with SCA’s commercial radio first “Concert in the Clouds” this Summer is a campaign I cannot wait to hear go to air. This is a virtual concert each Sunday in December across all our Hit and Triple M stations with Maccas being the inaugural partner.

Who has been a great mentor to you and why?
Amanda Unwin (Agency Sales Director) and Maryanne O’Sullivan (Group Sales Manager) here at SCA have been incredible mentors. Amanda brings such a brilliant energy to our team and Maryanne is renowned for her consistency and care for everyone she works with.

Words of advice for someone wanting a job like yours?
Show initiative, bring ideas to the table that will get the best out of yourself and those around you. Also, weather the storm hang in through the tough times and relish the good times.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:
(Dream life) Joe Rogan’s neighbour, interviewing the world’s most successful and interesting characters on my radio show/podcast.

My mantra is:
Be constructive and be genuine.

My favourite advert is:
Anything Hamish & Andy do in their weekly podcast; they have a knack of delivering an ad that is as funny and engaging as their own content.

Music and TV streaming habits. What do you subscribe to?
I get my music through SoundCloud as I love to know what is on the way up! Amazon Prime and Apple TV have a hold of me right now – Morning Wars is a great show!

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I was an angry fast bowler for the Tasmanian Tigers cricket team before working in media.

In five years' time I'll be:
Still getting after it!
