Yun Yip

Our Industry Insights Profile takes a weekly look at some of the professionals working across the advertising, ad tech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles and companies across the buzzing industry.

This week we speak to MediaMath country manager Yun Yip.

Time in current role/time at the company:

I joined as country manager in February 2017.

How would you describe what the company does?

We automate marketing to power great advertising experiences that are relevant and meaningful across every digital channel, format and screen.

What do you do day-to-day?

Ultimately my job is to achieve or exceed our ANZ target revenue. This means (out)performing for our existing clients, winning new clients and ensuring I’ve got the optimal (and happy) team in place to achieve all this.

Define your job in one word:

Dynamic.

I got into advertising/ad tech/marketing etc because:

I realised that being an organisational psychologist (my first degree was in psychology & sociology) which was my intended career choice wasn’t my thing after all. It was a bit of a fluke that I saw a post-graduate course in media sales, but I applied, got in and the rest is history.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role?

As technology continues to evolve, I have to take clients and my team on a continuous journey to deliver great digital marketing. The pace of change is relentless, which is exciting but demanding!

What’s the biggest industry-wide challenge you’d like to see tackled?

I’d like to see more evidence-based opinion in our industry to help younger executives better navigate the evolving media landscape.

Previous industry related companies you have worked at:

1st Screen, Telstra Advertising Network, Starcom and Carat.

Who is/has been a great mentor to you and why?

Without question my parents. They instilled in me the importance of compassion, empathy, integrity and doing the right thing by people. I’ve carried this with me through school, university and work; it’s my foundation from which everything else flows.

Words of advice for someone wanting a job like yours?

You need to love asking the question ‘why?’ and never be tired of learning.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:

A dance and/or yoga teacher on a tropical island

My mantra / philosophy is:

Always find time to eat, drink, dance and love. And if you can do all this whilst travelling – bonus points.

My favourite advert is:

I loved the Meat and Livestock Australia 2017 Australia Day Ad. Irreverent with a purpose. That spoke to me.

Music and TV streaming habits. What do you subscribe to?

I’m a huge fan of streaming TV and subscribe to Netlfix, Amazon, Google TV and Apple TV. Music wise I’m Apple Music all the way.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

For better or worse, I’m a pretty open book at work. They know everything.

In five years' time I'll be:

Hmm… you got me here. The honest answer is that don’t know where I’ll be but I know what I want. Which is to continue to be at the forefront of innovation, leading an excellent team within the marketing/advertising space – with sprinkles of AI, Blockchain and AR/VR.
