Industry Profile: Bohemia data director Faye Chen

23 July 2019

Our Industry Profile takes a look at some of the professionals working across the advertising, ad tech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles and companies across the buzzing industry.

This week we speak to Bohemia data director Faye Chen.

Time in current role/time at the company:
One month.

How would you describe what the company does?
Bohemia partners with clients to drive the best marketing mix for their business.

What do you do day-to-day?
I determine how best our clients can use their existing data to drive better insights.

Define your job in one word:
Automation.

I got into digital marketing because:
It was almost accidental. At the time, I managed an in-house job posting system that sent ads to job sites. Then I saw a technical account manager role that oversaw pushing paid search ads to different search engines called Dart Search (i.e the predecessor of Search Ads 360). It seemed like they were doing the same job and thus began my career in digital marketing.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role?
Education and improving the literacy of tech.

What’s the biggest industry-wide challenge you’d like to see tackled?
How do we keep evolving and make better use of the ever-changing tech landscape?

Previous industry related companies you have worked at:
Doubleclick, Performics/Starcom, DGM/APD, Atomic 212.

Notable ads/campaigns you have worked on:
Paid search for Samsung LED TVs. It was an amazing proposition at the time and was super helpful when it came to buying my own Samsung TV.

Who is/has been a great mentor to you and why?
I’ve been fortunate to have quite a few so it wouldn’t be fair to name just one. But they all encourage curiosity, exploration and being on the front foot.

Words of advice for someone wanting a job like yours?
Quoting one of the many mentors: Be fearless.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:
Reviewing movies and TV series from around the world.

My mantra is:
How can I find a better way of doing something manually?

My favourite advert is:
AAMI’s Car Insurance Campaign with Rhonda and Ketut. It was entertaining and left you wondering where the next ad would lead them.

Music and TV streaming habits. What do you subscribe to?
Binge watching Netflix. It’s all too easy to put up your feet and put something on.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I had aspirations to be a police officer from watching one too many cop dramas.

In five years' time I'll be:
Watching season three of a Game of Thrones spin-off.
