GroupM, the parent company of WPP's media agencies, has appointed News Digital Media sales director Danny Bass as chief digital officer with responsibility across all agencies.

Bass has spent the last ten years at News Digital Media and starts in the newly created role in November, reporting into GroupM chairman and chief executive John Steedman.

“Digital leadership is vital to the future of our company and this is an important new role for GroupM," said Steedman. "Our media agencies now all have strong digital leadership however with Danny’s appointment we are confident of taking the collective group’s digital offering to another level.”

Bass' responsibility covers all GroupM media agencies nationally including MediaCom, Mindshare, Maxus, MEC as well as search engine marketing agency Outrider.

Bass said: "At a time when the pace of change in technology, consumer behaviour and campaign accountability are rapidly transforming the media landscape, promoting digital thinking will be a key priority, whatever the platform may be. I am looking forward to leveraging my digital and publisher experience to lead the digital strategy across the group."
