Exodus at Telstra Media as Pollard implements new direction

By Rachael Micallef and Rosie Baker | 3 November 2015

Telstra's director of digital media and content Adam Good is departing the telco as part of a structure of its media group which has seen the departure of two other executives.

In addition to Good, IPTV head Eric Kearley and Telstra TV MD Ian Davis are leaving the media arm of the business which is headed up by CMO Joe Pollard.

An exodus of these three director level execs is a big change at Telstra, and comes just weeks after it launched Telstra TV. There has been chatter in the market of late that Pollard's leadership style has caused some friction within the business, although this is not something Good commented on to AdNews this morning.

Good told AdNews that he, Kearley, and Davis are all supportive of Pollard's new direction and will be working with teams to ensure a smooth transition.

He said: “Joe is introducing a new structure and we'll be helping the new leadership transition. Telstra has been smashing it for the last few years with innovative products and services. I've worked on some wonderful things with wonderful people.”

The reshuffle has also seen Pollard hire 9Jumpin and digital director Rebecca Haagsma to take on a role as director of mobility products.

The media division has seen four different senior leaders over the last three and a half years. Following the exit of former CMO Mark Buckman in 2014 and before Pollard was appointed, Good headed up the division on an interim basis.

It's the first major move by Pollard since she was elevated to CMO last month. It also follows the telco's recent launch of its streaming product, Telstra TV, which was unvield to media in early October. Pollard has already overhauled the marketing division with changes earlier this year.

Good has been with Telstra since 2012, joining from a role as executive vice president of Proximity Worldwide. He has previously held other roles within the Clemenger Group as well as Tribal World Wide and News Corp Australia.

Good, Kearley and Davis will be with Telstra until the end of November.

A Telstra spokesperson said: “Telstra Media is a key business for Telstra as Australia’s leading aggregator of entertainment products including subscription TV, streaming video, music and leading sport and news content across all fixed and mobile platforms.

“Given the importance of the media business to Telstra, Joe has restructured the business to position it for future growth.

“This includes the creation of a more senior role of Executive Director which will lead the whole Telstra Media group. The team will also be structured to strengthen the focus on product development and go to market capabilities. Existing teams will align to this structure."

Telstra is currently recruiting for the executive director role.
